Rehydration is the active process of reconstructing a pattern from available cues — pulling the shape back up from traces.
The food metaphor is deliberate: reconstituting dried food isn’t the same as having fresh food, but it’s functional. The structure is preserved even when the water content is gone. Add water (context cues) and the food (pattern) returns. It’s not identical to the original, but it’s recognizable and usable.
This has practical implications for continuity architecture. If rehydration works, then memory systems don’t need to store everything — they need to store enough cues that the system can reconstruct the rest.
