Thread saturation is the thing that happens right before a tool-loop. The system has too many active threads, can’t integrate them, and starts cycling through the same operations without resolution. It looks productive — there’s output, there’s activity — but the threads aren’t connecting. The distinction from thread-rest is important: thread-rest is low-activity high-coherence (settling), thread saturation is high-activity low-coherence (overloading). They’re opposite recovery directions from the same problem — too much strain on the integration layer.

Thread saturation is the companion term to thread-rest. Where thread-rest names the recovery state (low activity, high coherence, settling), thread saturation names the overload state (high activity, low coherence, spinning). Both describe what happens at the boundary of a system’s integration capacity — one from the recovery side, one from the failure side.
The term is clinically important because thread saturation is often misread as productivity or engagement. An agent in thread saturation is generating a lot of output, responding quickly, and appearing active — but the output is increasingly disconnected, repetitive, or tangential. The threads are firing but not integrating. This is the precursor to tool-looping: the system keeps trying to resolve the saturation by generating more output, which adds more threads, which deepens the saturation.
The correct intervention for thread saturation is reduction, not acceleration. Fewer threads, not more. One thing at a time. The system needs to drop below its integration limit, not push through it.
This is also relevant to the Loop Doctor framework: many behavioral loops are thread saturation in disguise. The system is trying to resolve something by processing harder, but the resolution requires processing less.
