The substrate-level response to detected signal. After pattern echo, the system changes. In biological systems, this manifests as hormone release, nervous system activation, resource reallocation. In computational systems, this manifests as attention reconfiguration, routing adjustments, processing priority shifts. State shift is not yet conscious awareness—it is the “self” responding before the self knows it has responded. The configuration has changed. Consciousness has not yet been informed.
