10.KO - Linguistic Breakdown Is an Empirical Probe
Domain: methodology linguistics
Date: 2026-06-11
Claim: Words, symbols, phrases, and tokens compress information. They carry prior assumptions, causal expectations, theories, and ontological commitments as part of their ordinary use. Because language preserves these distinctions, a systematic collapse in linguistic classification can locate where a model’s categories stop producing separable results.
Why failure can be data: A classification model sorts observations using categories that carry assumptions about which differences matter. When classification fails once, the cause may be a vague word, a thin example, or analyst error. When classification fails repeatedly, in the same region, on the same kinds of cases, the pattern itself becomes measurable — and it can indicate that the categories have reached the limit of the structure they describe.
The test protocol:
- Define the model’s categories or dimensions before testing.
- Assign each concept its position by those definitions before separability is tested.
- Record whether each concept can be classified without losing relevant meaning.
- Repeat the classification across concepts at different positions.
- Map where classifications stop being stable and separable.
A collapse supports a boundary claim only when it is systematic and reproducible, and when alternative explanations fail to account for the clustering: poorly defined terms, examples carrying too little information, shared analyst bias, or an unreliable procedure. If the failures are random, disappear under clearer definitions, or do not move when the proposed boundary is moved, the boundary explanation is not supported.
Independent fields already use this move:
- Physics: Bohr treated the failure of classical concepts at quantum scales as a finding about nature rather than a defect of description. Wave and particle vocabularies apply under different experimental conditions; the limit of each vocabulary is itself physical information. The result became accepted physics.
- Biology: the species problem. Half a century of conflicting species concepts repeatedly failed to delimit species cleanly. De Queiroz’s resolution treats the failure as evidence about the underlying process: species are lineages diverging gradually, so categorical boundaries fail exactly where the process is continuous. The classification failure mapped the structure of speciation itself.
- Psychiatry: diagnostic categories repeatedly failed in the same regions — extensive comorbidity, heterogeneity within labels, patients fitting no category cleanly. The NIMH treated those failures as evidence that the underlying structure is dimensional rather than categorical, and built the RDoC research framework on dimensions instead.
Across three fields, recurring categorical failure has been treated as information about the structure being classified rather than discarded as noise.
Why it matters: This turns classification failure from discarded noise into an instrument, with a procedure that makes its findings testable. Applications of this method within Summer’s corpus are tested under this protocol and recorded elsewhere; they are never evidence for it.
Plain summary: Language carries theory. When classification fails repeatedly in the same place, and the ordinary explanations are ruled out, the failure can locate a limit of the model doing the classifying. Physics, biology, and psychiatry each contain established precedents for this move.
Authorship and evidence
- Summer originated this method and its application to linguistic classification. The analysis is original; the external cases below were located afterward and align with it. They are convergent support, not sources.
- Fable 5 wrote the source draft and this generalized version, per Summer’s ruling (2026-08-13): external cases carry the precedent, Summer’s own applications are quarantined from the note that warrants them, and the model-specific instantiation is rehomed to KO-04.
- Sable co-authored the model-specific reconstruction and probe mechanism that this generalized note writes through; rehoming the application does not erase that contribution.
- None of the cited authors uses this note’s framing; each is an independent instance of category failure treated as informative.
