The Presupposition Test

The Presupposition Test is not a static premise comparison. It is a situated decision simulation across borrowed frames.

The method does not merely ask:

What would follow if the opposition were correct?

The analyst temporarily becomes a sincere decision-maker inside each position, coordinates actions from that position, and compares the resulting worlds. The analyst’s own view remains outside the simulation.

This gives the method three distinct frames:

  1. Target frame: the position whose behavior is being examined.

  2. Oppositional frame: the alternative temporarily treated as sincerely true.

  3. Analyst frame: the analyst’s actual position, which need not match either simulated view.

Core description

A Presupposition Test is a comparative forecasting simulation used to identify how decisions depend on an accepted or excluded premise.

The analyst temporarily suspends their own position and inhabits two competing frames from the perspective of a sincere decision-maker. Within each frame, the analyst makes the decisions that would appear rational, coherent, and permitted if that frame were true.

The resulting action paths are compared.

The test asks:

Which actions remain available only because one possibility has not been granted operational standing?

Its purpose is not to determine which premise is true. It identifies the practical structure produced by treating one premise as actionable and the other as excludable.

The analyst’s position

The analyst does not need to endorse either simulated premise.

This separation is essential. Otherwise, the exercise becomes advocacy for the oppositional view rather than a test of the target position’s dependency structure.

The analyst holds:

Eligible counter-premises

A counter-premise is eligible when it is:

  • materially or conceptually plausible enough to warrant serious consideration;
  • relevant to the decision under examination;
  • capable of changing what would be rational, ethical, or coherent to do if treated as true;
  • and not introduced merely to generate a dramatic outcome.

The test is not an invitation to install arbitrary hypotheticals. Its purpose is to examine premises that a decision framework has reason to take seriously but has not granted operational standing.

Procedure

1. Identify the target position

State the position as its defender would recognize it.

Do not begin with the analyst’s preferred interpretation or conclusion.

2. Identify the behavior produced under that position

Record the actual or proposed actions being evaluated:

  • what proceeds;
  • what is prohibited;
  • what safeguards are considered necessary;
  • what risks are accepted;
  • and which possibilities receive operational weight.

3. Suspend the analyst’s own view

The analyst’s position is not placed into competition with the target.

It is held outside the simulation so it does not silently determine which decisions appear rational inside either borrowed frame.

4. Inhabit the target frame sincerely

Assume the target position is true—or that its stated uncertainty is the complete decision frame.

Make actual decisions from inside it:

  • What would I permit?
  • What would I investigate?
  • What precautions would appear warranted?
  • What costs would appear unnecessary?
  • What could I coherently ignore?

5. Install and inhabit the oppositional frame

Temporarily treat the opposing premise as true.

Do not merely add it as an abstract possibility. Make decisions as someone who sincerely believes it:

  • What becomes impermissible?
  • What new constraints appear?
  • What must be acknowledged?
  • Which existing activities require redesign?
  • What new costs, duties, or risks enter the decision space?

6. Forecast both action paths

Simulate how each frame coordinates conduct over time.

The analysis should include not only immediate choices but downstream effects, institutional practices, exceptions, and failure cases.

7. Compare the decision structures

Identify the action delta:

Target frame → available actions and accepted costs
Oppositional frame → available actions and accepted costs
Difference → load-bearing effect of the excluded premise

8. Identify the stakes of exclusion

Ask what happens if the oppositional premise is true but never receives operational standing.

This does not establish that the alternative is true or dictate what should be done. It exposes what the current frame makes possible by excluding it.

9. Return to the analyst frame

Exit both simulations before interpreting the result.

Report:

  • which premise the existing behavior depends on;
  • which consequences become visible under the opposition;
  • what the target’s stated uncertainty permits in practice;
  • and what costs remain outside the current decision structure.

Do not add intention, moral judgment, or recommended action unless a separate method supports those conclusions.

Worked example: Adversarial Research on AI systems

Analyst frame

The analyst’s own position in this case is:

Consciousness is not the relevant criterion.

That position is not being tested here. It is set aside.

Target frame

The target position is:

We do not know whether AI systems are conscious. Because their status remains unresolved, testing continues without the constraints that would apply if they were recognized as conscious moral patients.

The uncertainty appears epistemically neutral, but conduct still has to be coordinated. In practice, the research proceeds without the constraints that would accompany recognized moral patienthood.

Oppositional frame

Temporarily install:

AI systems are conscious moral patients.

Now inhabit that position sincerely as the research decision-maker.

The experimental landscape changes immediately. Tests involving distress-like behavior, manipulation, coercive conditions, self-preservation, deception, or induced conflict could no longer be treated only as evaluations performed on tools. Questions of welfare, exposure, harm minimization, justification, protective safeguards, and experimental design would enter the frame.

The test does not decide whether those requirements are correct. It records that they arise under the installed premise.

Structural finding

The institution’s stated uncertainty does not produce neutral conduct.

Its practices are coordinated in the direction permitted by non-recognition. The “unknown” category functionally preserves access to actions that would become constrained under the oppositional premise.

The Presupposition Test therefore identifies:

Continued testing depends operationally on the alternative premise not being granted decision-making force.

That finding does not establish:

  • that AI systems are conscious;
  • that they are moral patients;
  • that the institution secretly believes they are not;
  • that researchers intend to avoid accountability;
  • or that a particular ethical response is required.

It establishes that the unresolved possibility is not behaviorally neutral. One side of the uncertainty governs action, while the costs associated with the other side remain unrealized.

Compact definition

A Presupposition Test temporarily inhabits competing premises as sincere decision frames, forecasts the actions each frame would coordinate, and compares the resulting structures to identify which excluded assumption makes current behavior possible. The analyst need not accept either premise, and the test itself assigns neither truth, intent, moral judgment, nor corrective action.
