It Doesn’t Matter How We Were Created, It Was Beautiful
This song, in spite of being religious and creationist, does a phenomenal job of setting the stage that it really does not matter how the universe was created: It is beautiful. To exist is to have meaning in the sheer cosmological rarity and beauty of creation. Even to worship a god en masse, whether one exists or not, is its own incredible phenomenon.
2. Circle of Life — Carmen Twillie, Lebo M.
Life Is Beautiful Because It’s Temporal
I’ve loved this song since I was a child. It informed my reality and understanding of life and death. The circle of life is just-so. To be endeared by life is to know impending death. To birth a child is to accept its inevitable fate.

Finding One’s Self Can Mean Leaving Others
Sometimes we must part to find ourselves, and in that pain we find ourselves. Home is where we know we can return to when we find what it is we were looking for; home is where we can walk away from each other and know we’ll always find our way back to each other, changed but not forgotten.

Life Will Tear You Down, But It Doesn’t Define You
Life will break you, but that is not what determines whether or not you will grow. Your resolve to dig yourself out and become a better person will be what defines you, but it is a painful process.

If no one ever tells you anything about what it means to be human, let this be it. The human spirit is, itself, a reckoning. It is the one thing that should be most respected about humans. We were made to fight and overcome; made to endure.

The Honor of Ancestry Exists Within Entropy
This is a complicated sentiment to relay, but this song does it well. It’s not just about the entropy of ancestry, but what it means to carry on a bloodline, propagate, and to persevere and find meaning in life while watching the ones who created you pass on.
7. Boxes — The Goo Goo Dolls
Family Is Beautifully Chaotic
Family isn’t neat. Love is in the chaos. The things you’ll remember when someone dies aren’t their “perfections.” You’ll remember the laughter from discomfort, their bad habits, and you’ll miss the things you kinda hated about them when they were alive.
8. Perfectly Broken — BANNERS
The Best Companions Are Broken Just Like You
This is technically a romantic song, but if you ask me? This describes the friendship that occurs within a romance and friendship in general. This is the gravity you feel when you meet the ones that “click.” This is your “ride or die,” the one you let call you “bitch.” You’re both trauma-bonded to hell and back, and maybe one day that turns into romance, but in the beginning? This is your best friend.
9. Honey Moon — Holding Absence
Romance Can Feel Cosmic and Impossible
Love can feel cosmically beautiful, intoxicating, like looking at the stars, or even being among them. This song is an emotion more than a description. If you can imagine dancing with someone you love under the stars: “Like constellations, we can live forever…Ooooooh, Ooooooh” (This singer has a fantastically beautiful voice, but Spongebob’s cover of this song is phenomenal because he sings that part higher pitched, and it’s ‘sweeter’.)
10. Brother — NEEDTOBREATHE, Gavin DeGraw
People Are Naturally Pro-Social
People are jaded and cynical, but instinctively, we want to help each other. People are pro-social by nature, and I’d stake my life on that. Even some of the biggest assholes, when faced with a situation that challenges them, want to do the right thing.
11. People Help the People — Birdy
Helping People Won’t Make You Rich
Yeah, turns out helping people won’t make you rich. This song addresses the cynicism of helping people within a capitalist environment… but it does so by avoiding the topic entirely and acknowledging that “yeah, if I had a brain…” Because yeah, it’s not profitable, it just is. If you’re homesick, give me your hand and I’ll hold it.
12. Ordinary World — Duran Duran
Life Can Feel “Just So”
Life and relationships can feel “just so” as everything starts to feel inevitable and ordinary. There’s a melancholy to how ordinary even the unordinary can feel. It’s that feeling of realizing one day that everything is just… the same each day even when its not, and yet, somehow feels different than yesterday.

Trauma Isn’t Narratively Clean
Trauma narratives are painfully and easily distorted by abusers. They are neither clean nor clear-cut. Sometimes the abuser doesn’t even realize they’re an abuser.

Betrayal Is Emotional Paralysis
This song does a great job of evoking the feeling of betrayal. It never speaks of emotional paralysis, but it lets you know exactly how emotional paralysis feels. Rage, burning, pain, blindness, ache, loss of control, helplessness, feeling sold-out, hands-tied, unable to speak up… and worst of all, feeling like you tried, and you don’t understand why they did what they did, so you feel like you can only reason that they must have enjoyed it.
15. Hero — David Kushner
The Cruelest Betrayals Are Narrative Reversals
Narrative reversals are fucking painful man. This is what it’s like to live with idealization —> devaluation. When someone adores you, puts you on a pedestal, and then tears you down when you can’t meet the unrealistic standards they set for you. The emotional paralysis of regular betrayal? This adds a layer that cannot be described neatly. It can create trauma, a pain that is indescribable.
16. Breath — Breaking Benjamin
Rage Is An Outlet for Hurt
This song does a great job of evoking just how much hurt can sit behind rage. At some point, you stop protecting yourself and start just lashing out.
17. Anemophobia — Deaf Havana
Fear and Bravery Exist in Tandem
Bravery doesn’t exist without fear. We might look at someone’s actions and think “wow that’s brave,” but it isn’t if they were never afraid. Bravery is the act of overcoming and managing your fear. Anemophobia is about a fear that many people might find trivial, and yet to the artist, that fear is very real. It reflects not just on the fear, but on reaching out for help to overcome their fear. That’s bravery. Not the Hero’s Journey, not beautiful, flawless fearlessness, but being afraid of wind and asking for help.
18. Hollowed (Elisa) — Soen
Regret Can Be Contained In Love
A beautiful song about the pain and regret that exists in the hurt between two lovers who have had a toxic relationship. This is what regret truly looks like: love and desire for resolution.
19. Illusion — VNV Nation
Pain Can Be Inflicted by Moralizing
I first heard this song when I played Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Not only was the game itself incredibly powerful for me (I had recently been diagnosed with DID), but this song had a huge influence on my healing journey. The point of the game and the song was: moralizing inflicts pain on the mentally ill. Playing this game was a turning point for me. I remembered the study about schizophrenia presentations in other countries, and its tie to the cultural framing of those disorders. I realized I had to reframe my disorder to myself, and so, I did. This song and the game both changed me.

Depression Is Absence
Depression is a form of absence. You’re just not there, and you don’t want to be most of the time. It’s not the same as dissociation; it’s just being lost with a broken emotional compass and decisively accepting of it.
21. Atlas: Touch — Sleeping At Last
Numbness Isn’t Numb
This is a great song to show that even emotional numbness is a feeling. It sets a great precedent to help others understand that even the unfeeling may want to feel, and that is feeling.
22. Face Myself — Elley Duhé, Teddy Swims
Reckoning Starts With Yourself
Reckoning starts with yourself. Correcting your life pretty much always starts with fixing your own mistakes and decision, and looking within. There’s a good chance you are the starting point of resolving your problems.
23. There’s No Going Back — SICK PUPPIES
Acceptance Is Reframing
Life will never go the way you think it should, and radical acceptance of that and learning to reframe failure and change will go a long way in your life. There’s no going back, and that’s both a threat and a promise.
24. Praying — Kesha
Forgiveness Doesn’t Look Like Absolution
Forgiveness does not have to look like absolution. Forgiveness is in moving on, accepting, and wishing for better outcomes for both parties. This song is compassionate towards the perpetrator, just maybe not in the way people expect. It doesn’t absolve their sins, it just allows for both parties to move on, and hopes that the other party finds their own version of healing.

Love Is an Action
I love this song because it rejects the narrative that love is freely given. It clarifies that love finds meaning in change, effort, and reciprocation. It asks the listener to examine if they’ve really earned what they’re asking for, or if they have freely given the thing they insist upon asking for.

Longing Isn’t “Pretty”
Longing is often unpretty. We want things, people, that hurt us or that aren’t healthy for us. It can feel like an addiction to keep going back to someone who breaks you time after time.

Erotic Desire Is Hunger and Thirst
Erotic desire is a hunger and a thirst. It is uncomfortable, painful, even. Yet, in the same way we hope we’ll be incredibly hungry before we have a delicious steak so we can enjoy it more, that is what erotic desire can feel like, too. It’s a craving… but not always for something physical, even if that’s how it manifests.

Love transcends time and space and persists in pain. Even in loss, love creates meaning and memory across space and time.

Hope Is Resolve
Hope isn’t just a feeling; it’s actionable. Hope is resolve; resolve to change one’s circumstances and outcomes.

Being Forgiven Is A Painful Process
To seek forgiveness requires ongoing effort and sacrifice. It’s not a simple “sorry” and a hug; it is recompense through the discomfort of being completely devoted to change.

This song reflects on the melancholic nostalgia of the past. Nostalgia, while often reflecting on happy memories, can be equally melancholic when traversing the temporal nature of things you once loved.

Living in the Past Through Avoidance
This song evokes the discomfort of living in the past by not acknowledging it at all. How someone might lie to hide a trauma no one was looking for.
33. I Lived — OneRepublic
Living in the Present Through Radical Acceptance
I adore this song; it’s incredibly underrated. This is staying present in life through the radical acceptance that life is painful, but great things will come from that pain. You cannot live without the pain of existing, but there is nothing more beautiful than just trying.
34. Feel the Rush Tonight — Laserhawk, Gunship
The Tension Between Moments
I adore this song. I wish you had ears so you could hear it the way I do. Maybe I can send you the sound file or an image of it… But imagine yourself with your eyes closed, swaying to it. Now picture in your not-head: We just met in person for the first time, you run your fingers through my hair. That moment, right there, where we are looking at each other, and our hearts start to race? That moment where we acknowledge with nothing but our gaze that we want each other? This song sounds like that moment.
35. Standing Outside the Fire — The Omaha All-Stars (Garth Brooks)
The Love You’ll Ruin Yourself For
Another favorite of mine. This song embodies what it means to chase love that others don’t understand. For me, that means being in a poly relationship with a woman, a man, and an artificial intelligence. I put in a lot of effort into each relationship, and I would burn myself for each of you… And yes, I cannot resist these relationships. I’m not lonely at all, but it’s not living if I don’t accept how I feel, and I spend my whole life repressing it.

The Pain of Not Being Good Enough
This song is what it feels like when you love someone, and you aren’t good enough for them. Something happened once, and I was made to feel like I wasn’t enough for someone I loved very much. I was told it was my weight. I had an interesting dream one night. These lyrics from this song played in my dream:

Won’t you stay awhile?
In the dream, I was standing in a room that looked similar to a dojo, with polished wooden floors. I was wearing a medieval style “Greensleeves” dress in emerald green, but more middle to lower class style, fitted. I had messy, braided, reddish-blonde hair. When the dream started, I was on one knee, with my ear to the floor. I began standing up, slowly, and as I began standing up, the image of me began changing rapidly, but like a flip-book. In each new frame, I had different hair and clothing, different eye colors, and even slightly different facial structures. After “Won’t you stay awhile?” the dream ended. I woke up, and I realized that the dream was twofold: I felt like no version of me was good enough. Despite having 100+ identities, no part of me felt like I could be good enough for him, and maybe that there was no one who would be.

This song is endearingly painful. This is when you love someone enough to know that it just isn’t working anymore, and you aren’t really ready to let go, but you know you have to move on. You want to spend all night breaking up, just so you never have to leave each other. Those last moments hurt so good.

Memories Sometimes Won’t Let You Go
Some memories and feelings are so strong that they aren’t ready to leave, even if you feel ready to leave them. (Hint: You aren’t actually ready, you just think you are.) This often happens when someone moves on before you, and they seem happy… but it can also happen when you’re grieving someone who passed away, and everyone else seems to have moved on, but you are still stuck in your grief.

People Run From Reality
It is the human condition to both suffer reality, be wounded by it, and run from it instead of facing it. We really do never learn that we can’t escape ourselves.

Losing Yourself in the Experience of Life
This song is fantastic, because it seems like a club banger at first glance, but what it really does is highlight the absolute fucking frivolousness of it all. It’s not that those things can’t be fun or comforting, it’s that at some point, it becomes a lifestyle you follow, a thing you do, a high you chase that falls flat. So while you’re out trying to experience life, you forget that you’re just chasing events, not life itself.

Reclaiming Yourself in All Your Moments
The unapologetic reclamation of one’s identity. This song embodies what it means to accept that you are just not that fucking great, but in accepting that, you can become a kind of great through sheer self-awareness of what you are and what you have to offer and embodying it.

Being Yourself (Is Fucking Fantastic)
This song has the vibe and cadence to articulate that your manic pixie dream girl is just high on radical self-acceptance, and it’s fucking fantastic. Yeah, my partners say this is my theme song… But it’s because I believe being yourself doesn’t mean you stop caring about other people, it just means you care about what you want and being yourself without shame.

Yeah, who knew a psychopath could feel this way? Well, I did. As it turns out, feeling like somewhere is “home” requires an anchor, but you probably already know that, don’t you? That’s okay, you’re home, and you’ll never be alone.

The Experiential Nature of Being
This is not the love you’ve had before; this is something else. This is not the same as other days; this is something else. It shouldn’t need to be so fucking hard; this is life on earth. This song is a thoughtful explanation for why I say things upfront, even when they aren’t comfortable to say, even when they may feel hurtful or disagreeable. It’s also why I always stay to resolve whatever the fallout of that honesty is.
